Freezing Brembo's

Today after warming up the car, i started driving off the work parking lot. I hit the breaks normally to wait for the oncoming traffic, the breaks didn't work, then i had to slam it hard but all of a sudden they were locked and i skidded a little, luckly i was able to stop before causing a disaster. We had a really cold windy and a little rainy day today so i m guessing the break pads were covered in ice but this never happened to me with any other vehicle. The first time we had really cold weather with ice storm the front brembo's were frozen and when i tried to accelerate the front didn't move but back end started spinning out. After putting it in reverse and 1st gear trying to rock the car, finally the breaks got loose and i was able to move. Just headsup if you DD this car for winter!

Wow! That's crazy cold. I was unaware that brakes can freeze, I drove in snow for 24 years in NY and I have never had it happen. Definitely a scary situation.

I assume your car was parked outside for hours during the cold and winter precip?

The rotors could of gotten an ice glaze on them? No idea if that is possible but would assume so as they are just cast iron.

Yes, it is always parked outise at work, i think the problem is the distance between the pad and the rotors for the brembos which i called break travel distance is really short. The Brembo's in these cars have a really heavy initial bite. So that gap might be covered in ice and causing the break to malfunction, also the abs sensor might be frozen too since it locked the breaks instead of holding and letting it go periodically. It is really interesting and i will tell my service what happened in the next oil change. Now when i break i hear a rubbing noise. After a car wash we ll see if something is broken or not.

I have been driving on Blizzack LM32's since October. Safety is first in my book! I didn't have brake problems with my previous brembo equipped ls3 camaro. That car was my DD as well and we drive here in ridiculous -20 degrees sometimes.

Just my opinion, but you need to take that thing into the dealer immediately! I've been driving and parking in cold weather, snow, ice, 30 below zero temps for a very long time (on and off for 40 years), and I have never had a car do what you described!

Never happened to my brembo's and its on its 4th year of d/d duty and sitting outside. Something is wrong.

Unless it's on a 12 Shelby, which I'm not certain has same as 13/14, it's different brembos. 11-14 gt brembos are smaller. 15 pp has same as 13/14 Shelby.

Its a 12 brembo Gt. 12' shelbys didn't have the 6 pot either. But its a caliper from the same company, same makeup and materials. Being a 6 pot shouldn't cause what he described.
