Can anyone with experience of either Roush or Cobra axle back systems give some advice / recommendations on which of the them gives the best upgrade to the V8 rumble on a 2018 pre-facelift ?

Add a H pipe or not ?

If you still have the stock suitcase resonator then either X or H pipe would be an improvement.

X-pipes tend to be higher-pitched and more raspy while H-pipes have a lower pitch and sound more like a deep growl. In terms of horsepower and torque, there are some differences. X-pipes tend to have better power while H-pipes have better torque

EDIT: I mean I cannot condone any modifications to a car that increases it's noise or emissions and I fully comply with the DVSA 😬

I've read that a H pipe makes very little difference on a pre-facelift ?

The performance gains between the H and X is pretty negligible but either will be an improvement in airflow over the stock resonator. Changing the mid pipe and mufflers won't do much more than change the sound and reduce some weight.

Might be helpful if you list your current mods and your goals.

No mods what so ever so far other than Michelin PS4s all round which doesn't really count I guess (had car a month).

Looking more for authentic sound over performance

H pipe will give you that deep tone rumble, as far as muffler choice the roush axle back is loud and raspy. A couple good options is either Corsa Touring mufflers with H pipe or Borla S Type with H pipe. Those will give you good volume but won't be too loud.

Of course it makes a difference, the resonator is huge, it’s just not a massive difference with standard absolutely crap back boxes.

Mine with Roush axle backs and Mishimoto H pipe, H pipe gave quite a volume increase

Fords of course
I have a 2016 Mustang and initially went the Roush axle back to start with and later added the Roush H pipe. It sound fn unreal. Very loud on cold start up but settles down once warm. The beauty of the set up is you can keep the volume civilised but put the foot down to blow your mind🤣🤣. In terms of performance gains who knows or really cares, I just did it for the sweet sweet sound.🤘😎🤘

I had Roush axle-backs with h-pipe (GT101) and loved it.
My brother in law just had Roush axle-backs and he loved it.
He now has added an h-pipe and loves it even more - my sister hates it :like:

Obvs with my petrol head on, day 1 was Roush axle backs and GT101 h-pipe

This is a pre-facelift with a Cobra Sport Axle Back and a Mishimoto H-pipe. Great rumble and no rasp for me. 98dB on a track day (now 102/103 with a supercharger fitted).
