Ok I've hit a road block ( pun intended). My car has shipped but I'd like to track it while is in transit. I remember a 6g member talking about this but don't remember who. I have some info from my dealer but hit a dead end when I called CSX. CSX claimed they did not give info to private parties (me) and that I would need the tracking numbers from Ford. I've sent a PM to Rachel, waiting for a response. In the mean time you guys can sound off. I'm sure if we get this figured out we will all benefit.

My dealer said they would track it for me once it's on the train. Hopefully within two weeks they can start tracking it.

its in the source look up your car using the vin open the source.. search for "customer" It will hit 11.... go down to the one that shows your vin and look for all the in transit lines within that area I think it is around the 4rth "customer" when the train gets to one of its points, it shows on there... but it will not show its exact location

You need to get your rail car number (also often called an "ETTX" number) from your dealer. This can actually start with "ETTX", or it may not. My car came on car # "CNA 704103".

Once you have that number you can track it via the phone:

CSX:

1. Call CSX at 1 800-235-2352
2. When prompted for location or weight, press 1 on your phone for location
3. When prompted for the car initials, say them and wait
4. When prompted for the 6-digit car number, say or key-in your 6 digit car number
5. When prompted for the next car, either say 'Done' or press the pound sign (#) twice

Union Pacific:
1. Call UP at 1 800-877-5123
2. Follow phone prompts for Trace
3. Say the rail car number completely and clearly. Example CNA704103 all together
4. Listen for your update

Only one may track your rail car, or both from what I have read. In my car both were updated and gave slightly different information at different parts of the journey so I used both.

Here is a list of what the different rail codes mean:

Departure - Railcar has departed the city listed enroute to next big city along the way.
Arrive In Transit - railcar has arrived city listed
Junction Recieved - railcar has arrived at a junction to be handed off to the next railroad to haul it
Hold or Delayed - self explanatory, could be many reasons. This is usually less than 24 hours
Release from Customer -railcar was released from customer (could be Ford or the receiver at the other end)
Placed Actual - railcar is actually placed at the location it will be unloaded
Bad order - railcar has a mechanical problem and needs repaired (usually less than 48 hour delay)
Bad Order Release - railcar has been repaired and is ready to move again
Arrive Destination - railcar has arrived at its current destination
Pulled from customer - railcar was pulled from the customer's location (FORD or receiver)
Placed Construct - railcar has arrived its final desination but there is not room to unload it yet (will move to placed actual when the room is available)
Storage - railcar has been emptied and is now being moved to storage

For those of you in the western states, it's BNSF Railway that ships Fords. You have to have a legitimate need to have an account with BNSF to trace shipments (in the wake of 9/11) so your dealer is likely able to track via BNSF, but customers cannot to my knowledge.

Who has ideas about how to track a car crossing the Pacific to Hawaii? COTUSB shows 25 transit days estimated for the first car (dealer stock, not my order) that I checked. From what I can tell California cars were given a 10-11ish day estimate, so maybe its estimating about 2 weeks on the boat which seems fairly quick (my military PCS car shipment took 3 weeks) but not unheard of. My car is scheduled for a build date of 10/20 and I'm hoping it will be here before Thanksgiving. Would like a test drive sooner though :)
