Hi guys,

Question: so I have been driving with the wheels in my sig for three or so months. They have so many chips in them that it seems unreal. I still have my stock PP wheels that I have had over two years and not a single chip is present on them. The PP wheels have been exposed to more wear by a long shot (think over 25k miles more than these wheels, if not even more than that) and I still do not see any damage from rocks on any of them. Is powder coat more prone to chipping than a painted wheel?

I have one MRR 350 bronze wheel that constantly has small little flecks and chips in it. the other ones are ok. Im now on my 3rd wheel and hold little hope it will hold out. Their powder coating is flat out bad with no excuses.

I bought these wheels because they are hubcentric and they had a big discount on them and the custom powder coating. Every change I need to switch sensors, mount & balance, and recquartz and its all on my buck. I now negated all of my savings, and this isnt getting nit picky with the powder that was chipping when they got to me.

Yeah I have three of my wheels that have chips on them. May have them redone in the same color locally over the winter, which will cost $600 :(.

I would avoid MRR wheels in the future. While I didn’t have any finish problems with mine, the hub bore was so poorly done I never could get the vibration to go away, even switching tires. Swapping to different wheels made the vibration go away. Also no real support from MRR. When my 15 got hit I let the insurance company keep them, that’s how little I cared for them lol. Sorry to hear about your rock chip problems :( although no powdercoat won’t get damaged going down the road, it shouldn’t flake off like you’re saying, that’s pretty bad.

As long as they are prepped correctly, baked at the right temperature and let cured, powder coating finish will last as long as your cars paint.. assuming you treat your car paint correctly.

Also, our powder coater don't spend time doing other things so they only have their oven temperatures set for wheel baking and not super high temperatures to also bake someone else's iron fence or metal trash bins while our customer's wheels are in together.

We use certified powder coater with 8+ years of experience and we tape all the back pad and center bore so we don't have any issues with vibrations or fitment. Any extra bleed overs onto the back pad or center bore, we clean out before shipping out.

If a wheel is properly prepped it is very strong and wont have issues.

HRE
BC Forged
ADV1
Etc

They all powdercoat their wheels.

Was thinking of getting my wheels powdercoated and had seen nothing but negatives on the idea, this is pretty reassuring however.

Any tips on finding the right place to get powdercoating done?

Thanks!

Yeah I need to fix these wheels possibly this winter. My car is not driven off road, just a daily driver. These wheels have not been exposed to nearly any of the usage that my stock PP wheels got, and yet the MRRs look much much much worse than the stocks.

There is something to be said for OEM wheel finish, its designed to last a long time. Might not be the most unique or pretty but it sure does resist damage.

While I agree that OEM equipment is designed to withstand a lot of usage, wheels that cost as much as I paid for them should not be chipping within three months. They are pretty beat up and I do not think that this is acceptable :frusty:.

Ask questions to the finisher

What their prep work is
What powder they use
baking process etc

See some of the work they have done.

The powdercoat isnt the issue its who and how its coated that is.
If i knew i would of bought black wheels and had them coated locally. They charge a lot but it would of cost me less in the long run, i could of seen colors in person, and it would of been done once and thats it.
This experience will keep me far away from mrr in the future.

Wondering if there is a way to get MRR to comment on the complaints on their wheel paint holding up/chipping? They sponsor this forum, do they have a rep on here? I am considering their M600, but don't want to end up with a wheel that looks bad after a year.
