Oil Weight Question

I tried searching and did not find anything. I either suck at the search function or there is nothing. I had a 2016 GT MT-82 (non performance pack) last year. It called for 5w-50 oil. My 2017 GT 6r80 (obviously not performance pack) calls for 5w-20. Is this just a gimmick by Ford assuming manual guys are going to drive their cars harder? I know they are the same engine, so why the different oil recommendation? If anyone has done an oil analysis on both, which one seemed better?

Same engine, the 5W20 is better for cold start-up, cold-weather, and for daily driving, however 5W50 will give you slightly better loading and protection when abusing the car on a hot day on a track.

It depends on what you do with your car. If you don't track your car, stick with a 5W20. I do both and run Mobil 1 0W40.

Gotcha! Just was not sure based on the oil weight recommendations on the cap. Im a mechanically knowledgeable guy, i just did not want to mess anything up LOL. Mine is a daily with daily trips to Mexico, but no track days or hot lapping. Just a pull every now and then

My 2015 PP calls for 5w20...now it's fully built and have stayed with 5w20 for zero issues for over 2 years...at more than 1000+WHP.

The newer motors really don't need anything different. My change, however, is I went with Amsoil Drag Racing Oil...and Amsoil for everything.

No S550 GT's ever called for 5w50. Only the GT350 called for 5w50. All S550 GT's are 5w20.
And don't use too thick oil for the bearing clearance. It will do more harm than good.

Not if you let it warm up before beating on it. S197 Coyotes all had the same engine and specified both 5W20 & 5W50 (for the track packages). It all depends on the use of the car. I wouldn't run 5W20 on a car driven har on track in 90-100* weather.

Of course not, oil pressure is too high for the street among other things. Most people using higher weight don't even know when they should and shouldn't use it

I'd be surprised if the Voodoo were any different. The Voodoo, Road Runner, and S550 "track pack" all recommend 5W50 for daily driven cars. I don't think it's an issue as long as you're not an idiot and revving a cold engine.

I think it's too high on the voodoo as well. I think a 0w30 0w40 or 5w30 or 5w40 would be better suited depending what they do with the car and where they live. The roadrunner has too high of pressure on the street also using 5w50. A lot of users switched away, they have zero issues.

I worked for Ford as a master tech for almost a decade and part of it during the release of the coyote and roadrunner engine. I know them far better than youre thinking.

Not really. I used M1 0W40 in my M3, my Coyote, and i'd probably use it in the Voodoo as well since the 5W50 Motorcraft quickly shears down to M1 0W40 cS5 levels (75 & 14 SUS & cSt).

I'm not sure how you would have the confidence of recommending a 0W30, which is significantly thinner. :shrug: But as a "master tech" i'm sure you know everything by now. :lol:

Motor craft oil is junk. That's public knowledge. 0w30 can be fine depending on the use of the car. You need to look at the uoas of gt500s and road runners both of which are spec' d for 5w50 that run other weights and have beautiful UOAs. The knowledge is there but you rather insult me and take stabs lke a child. Go over to svt forums and look at the hundreds of UOAS.
