Anybody gonna watch it? If so, where did you pick up your "special viewing glasses."

Can anyone tell me what is so special about these solar safe viewing glasses? How are they different from my polarized Oakley's?

Ebm my parents live outside charlotte so I am planning to take the day off and watch it there where its closer to maximum coverage. I am just nerdy for space stuff.

The while I havent worn solar eclipse type glasses in a while, I believe they would be comparable to a welding mask. Using a good pair of sunglasses would be better than nothing but from my understanding a lot of sunglasses don't completely block UV rays so the dedicated solar eclipse glasses would be better protecting your eyes from that. I also believe though that your eyes could be damaged simply from the intensity of the light too. Idk about you but even with my darkest sunglasses it is still uncomfortable to look directly at the sun and that is what you will be doing for an extended period of time during the eclipse. So the extremely dark lenses of the solar eclipse glasses would protect you from that too, as well as give you better contrast between the sun and moon.

If you have ever welded its basically like how with normal sun glasses the arc is still just a glowing light but when you have a welding mask on you can actually see the details of what you are doing.

I have seen tons of the glasses posted on amazon and I personally will be buying them off there. I've seen gas stations and walmart selling them also recently. I am sure there is very little difference between any in the 5-20 dollar range as they are probably all just some made in china cancer causing crap but will do a sufficient job for the hour or two I need them.

I'm located in the path so we'll be watching it. Family is coming in from out of state to experience it. I picked up our NASA approved glasses at work.

You're in a prime area to see it! I need some glasses and will be finding a spot off of Interstate 95 to see it. Then promptly heading home to avoid the traffic. I might just go as far as SOB... Just make a day of it.

Can you imagine being an astronaut accidentally glancing at the sun without an atmosphere to reduce the solar radiation from hitting your eyes? Ouch!
