Here you go Terry:Sounds like a great trip you had Greg and good to hear the car didn't have any hiccups along the way. I would like to do a similar trip, would you mind posting a map of the rough route you took so I have a nice starting point please![]()

Thanks for all the info Greg, much appreciated  I will start to look into the various places on the map and get planningHere you go Terry:
I ran out of places so I couldn't put in Brummen in the Netherlands. Otherwise you have all my stopping points there. Each day around 4-5 hours driving.
I only went to Fontenay le Comte because of friends but it's an interesting stretch of Atlantic coastline nearby. Travelling on D roads over to Crocq was beautiful and tarmac outside towns far better than our A roads. Same with there to Vallon-Pont d'Arc which is the top end of the deep Ardeche gorge, but used the toll free and scenic A75 autoroute south of Clermont Ferrand. Then it's mountain views all the way to Turin (taking care to avoid the massive tunnel and use the mountain pass at Montgenevre).
Any of the Italian lakes is worth a visit. We went to Orta, then north into scenic Switzerland (where you need to watch your speed as fines could be heavy). Again avoided massive San Gottard tunnel and took the pass. You can do the Furka and Grimsel on the same route but one was enough for me. Stayed in Weggis on Lake Lucerne and got a boat into the city for a visit.
After that A5 Autobahn (mostly unlimited but busy) up through Germany to Walldorf. We went there so as to see the museum at Sinsheim (a bucket list visit, it's amazing http://sinsheim.technik-museum.de/en/ and those really are full size planes on top).
Top speed reached on the final stretch of the A3 into Netherlands. Stayed in Brummen to see this place: http://gallery-aaldering.com/en/ then back to Hook of Holland for the ferry to Harwich.
