I have about 8,000 miles on my car, and I'm loving it. Can't wait for the north east to really warm up.

One thing I'd really like to learn more about is how to remove interior rattles and squeaks. I don't have anything really bad yet, but there are one or two that come and go. I think they are in the center of the dash (that grille on the top of the dash seems to have some loose stuff under it, and some stuff right at the bottom of the center console gets lose and buzzes at certain temps at certain RPMs). Some seem to be coming from the glove compartment (only when closed), and still others seem to be coming from under the passenger's side dash (where the cables are exposed down there).

Say I have some time on my hands. What could I do to really make the interior silent (like driving a brand new Benz or something)?

I've heard suggestions of using silicone spray from time to time--it seems a bit too thin for eliminating squeaks long term. My grandfather (huge car guy) told me how he took his E Class in and got them to take the whole dash apart and wax (paraffin?) every joint.

What are my options here? Paraffin wax? Ski wax? Foam jam foam in thicker places?

I know you've got to be careful what you put on plastics so they don't disintegrate.

Thanks, guys!

Coming from a Honda civic with solid engine mounts, I don't have a single complaint about the interior other than the outdated gauge cluster.

Thanks for your input.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? Perhaps lithium grease?

I've used lots of new, clean rags and foam or felt tape.

Fucking thing still squeaks. Dealer's had it for over a month and they say it's "normal."

Fuckers.

You know, I recently got a rattle in my car too. Only 4 months of ownership but it was on the lot for about a year. It's a pretty damn intense rattle though and I feel like it comes from the passenger side door. I'm not sure about where it actually comes from though. I feel like it could be a wire somewhere in the door panel or some of the cheaper plastics. Might have to look into interior mods in order to really find the motivation to tear apart the door panel :/

I know my rear view mirror rattles quite a bit when the weather is warmer in the afternoon. It doesn't do it in the morning. Bugs the crap out of me sometimes, but I haven't looked yet to see what can be done about it.

The vent to the left of my cluster rattles pretty badly. That seems to be the only one I have with 12k miles, headers, and a loud catback. I imagine the best solution will be felt tape or small bits of adhesive-backed foam near where plastic pieces clip together behind the surface of the dash. I've seen felt tape used on friends' vehicles with decent success.

It will never stop. Just get an exhaust and get on the gas. :)

Coming from three subarus, the mustang doesn't hold a candle to the amount of rattles. As said above, felt tape is what the dealerships usually use. Another solution I have heard of but never used is expanding foam. YMMV.

For anybody still annoyed by this, I followed this dude's guide and it helped a lot:

http://www.mustangecoboost.net/threads/dash-rattles-squeaks-fix-diy.718/

I did more or less the exact same stuff. Used a foamy double-sided tape all over those two aluminum pieces. I wrapped the clips, any flat spots of plastic, and a couple spaces around the headlight switch where it had some room to wiggle around. Probably overkill, but everything fit back beautifully and my rattles are gone.

Shouldn't have to do this on a 1yo car, but here we are. May as well just deal with it.

That is an excellent write up thanks. May have to do the felt.
