Excuse me if this has already been discussed...But a valid and interesting point that a MOCGB member has enlightened... Which reads as follows.:

April 2017 excise duty ?
Hi , can anyone advise ? My Newly ordered Stang has an expected 12 month build date from now and my question is this : when it arrives on uk shores next February / March can I instruct the dealer not to register the car until after 1st April 2017 ? This has big implications regarding the new 2017 vehicle excise duty regulations ! If registered before April 2017 it is initially £1100 then £505 every year after , but if registered after April 2017 it is £2000 then £140 every year after ! As you can see it is a big saving for someone who intends to keep the car for ever . I have even thought about putting my order on hold . Thoughts and advice appreciated, cheers .

As a note.. I have had 2 test drives now...both with different dealers and BOTH new nothing about this..

I may be missing something but thats a big saving thats for sure...

As long as the car is under 40k you will get the lower tax if registered on or after 1/4/17

You will have to make sure your dealer doesn't register it before that date if it's delivered earlier

The 1st years tax is a grand more so that will push the OTR price up right? Will the dealers be happy with sucking that up just to keep the customer happy? The price is locked in on order day so the dealer would take the hit.

Contract of sale says the price is locked except instances of items outside their control such as tax. Your otr price will increase in April 2017 by £1000 even if you locked in an order now for delivery after. If the cost of the car goes over the 40k mark it will also incur the higher bracket too so depends on your options

That makes sense. And now I remember I have seen some people say their price increased slightly due to the tax.

A fully loaded v8 vert is going to be over the 40k I bet. Wouldn't be surprised if there is another price increase before then.

Do you think the government could force fords hand?

Correct, i went to one dealer who hadn't a clue, i told him surely thats his business to know? the rest of the experience you can gather!!

Then went to my local dealer, a Mustang owner and number one for all things mustang in the dealership...

great response, he knew exactly what was happening, he quoted that although they are advising 12 month wait from order he said this now will be realistically 9 months.

he advised to return around june and place the order, he also remarked that if the car comes before the April change he will hold out from registering it.

I therefore will be taking advantage of the continued £140, the car will be below £40K, although he did say even though price locked in, any additional tax would fall to buyer, so the extra £900 or so will have to be shelled out..

I don't mind this as the £140 per year will leave me more for insurance +mods !

You will probably find that the the 40 limit is based on list so if you at at £39860 then you will be over it in April 2017. Cars are quoted inclusive of 1st year tax so makes sense that next year they will add that on and you likely won't get the lower rate if you wait.

Not sure where you get that £39860 figure from?

I've just used the configurator and selected all options, even adding £500 for stripes or roof.

The cost I'm getting is £38085 fully loaded GT, add on the excess tax (around £900 i believe?) and you still won't touch £39K?

As long as you're intending to keep the car for about 3 or 4 years you will save money by waiting for the new tax changes, also residuals will be better as new buyer only has to pay £140 a year. See below:

Err sorry to disagree with you...but i worked for a main dealers for a while and THEY DO,,! certainly at that level too

Same on the Hot Rod scene ..

Take a `34 Ford Coupe not correctly registered,,has Road Tax
The same car correctly registered FREE road tax..Historic vehicle..Hell of alot easier to sell...and some of these are £30k -60k:headbonk:
