Hi All,

I have just been on to Ford Customer Services to see what the policy is regarding modifications on the Mustang and if they void the warranty. My initial plans are to have a full exhaust system and use the Ford Racing suspension kit on day one when i finally get the car. I had it confirmed that they will not void warranty unless there is a issue with vehicle specifically down to the parts installed as confirmed by the lovely Lauren at Ford Customer service.:)

I thought that this was the case but i just wanted to make sure before i started trying to source parts for the car. Just thought i should share my findings for those that are interested, although warranty work has always felt a bit dealer specific from past experience:frusty:

Yep. it would be hard for them to argue a mechanical modification caused a paint defect, but an aftermarket exhaust causing an engine issue? I wouldn't like to bet my house on SOME dealers trying to wriggle out of that.

There's no reason for the dealers to cause a fuss. I imagine they love warranty work as they can just bill it to Ford.

I think exhaust is likely to be the most common sticky one. Whlist one can argue that it's not part of the engine, it does have an effect on it.

Ultimately it will fall to Ford to accept or refute a claim (God forbid) and I can't see them falling over themselves to pay out if they can avoid it. The cost of going to court will be beyond the means (or desire) of many, so there will always be a degree of risk.

I posed the question to Andy Barratt himself and his reply was effectively to wait for 'approved' upgrades from the Ford Stores. This speaks volumes as far as I'm concerned.

Whilst I heavily modded my S197, there was no warranty at stake. I will be more cautious with the S550.

Each to their own...

I think warranty is such a grey area when it come to modifications, best policy would be to do nothing until your out of warranty but that is easier said then done.;) If I modify a car I have the mentality that i will be paying for any repair and if it is cover under warranty that is a bonus. I just thought it would be worth asking so i know what i am getting myself into.

So long as you have it in writing..................
Indeed!

You'll never get anyone to commit to anything ahead of a claim, when it'll be considered and any avenues for repudiation investigated. Doesn't change the fact that unless the mod directly contributed to the failure the warranty should cover it.

Absolutely. I'd fully expect a "discussion" :)
I won't be doing much other than cosmetic.
