What does S550 stand for?

It's the chassis code. Prior to the S550 was the S197(2005-2014), prior was the SN-95(94-98, then the New Edge 99-04). Before that was the Fox(79-93), then before that they were recognized by their generations rather than chassis codes.

If it follows past convention, the 'S' stands for specialty or sport, which is the car's market segment. The 550 is a program number assigned by the product planners. Knowing this car was for the 50th anniversary, perhaps that influenced the choice of the number.

Its just an internal chassis code:

For example

Ford uses S550 for current, s197 for prior

BMW uses F10 for current 5 series, F12 for current 6 series, last gen 3 series was e90 & e92

Which I never really understood, because while there were big sheet metal and interior changes, the SN95 chassis was essentially identical to the Fox Body. Don't see why those are considered different generations.
