Hey guys,

So I've been really underwhelmed with the trade-in offers I've received from a few dealers.

I have a 2017 Shelby GT350, 31k miles, nothing wrong with it, I've changed oil and kept up with maintenance religiously. Same with paint care. Basically the car is in excellent condition and has most options (tech package).

Typical consumer sites priced my trade-in at around 40k-41k. The dealers have been offering 32k and below. They won't budge. Is this just a case of the dealers in my area being douches or is this typical trade-in value? If so, I'm going private party, lol.

Thanks for any help you can provide. :)

Tough times for car dealers no money coming in means they don’t want to spend on a specialty car that may be on the lot for a while. Try private sale first if you can especially if you don’t owe anything on it. Post on EBay, bringatrailer.com etc.

Seems a little low, but if I am being honest 31K miles is high for a specialty car like this and will turn away many buyers who are looking for low mileaged ones. I think the low offers you are getting is due to the higher mileage and the fact that dealers don't really want cars like a GT350 right now because they could sit on the lot for a long time. So I think you are getting lKow ball offers like this because dealers don't really want your car.

Have you thought about selling it privately? Maybe ask high 30's, it should sell. I checked wholesale a few weeks ago. 2018 GT350 with 3000 miles and electronics package. $39-40K is the best offer and I am guessing most dealers would not offer me much more than that. I am not selling the car, but this has to be the worst time to try and sell one. At some point your better keeping it and waiting this out for the market to rebound.

Yes, I had mentioned going private party in the original post, and that seems to be the route I'm going to go.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! :)

Trading in one of these is a waste of time. You will never get what its worth. Better off selling it privately. The only advantage on trade is the tax savings.

Just went through this 2 weeks ago. 2016 Avalanche Gray, tech pack, 13500 miles. Dealer offered and I accepted $38,000.

They then listed it for $45,000 and the car was gone in 3 days.

Used car sales are regional, and you don't know what the buyer actually paid. I bought mine in November and it was listed at $55K online. I paid $50K including tax, dealer fees, etc.

Re: selling privately. I recently (30 days ago) sold my flawless 2003 Lightning on Autotrader for a very good price. Looked at EBay but listing fees too high and sellers cost could not be determined for low volume seller. Thought about BaT but I understand they try to talk you down on your reserve. Autotrader worked out to my satisfaction - I only ended up $50 out of pocket. You do have to deal with the usual low-ball trolls and tire kickers. Might have gone to BaT if it hadn’t worked out on AT. Would not use EBay. Afraid I would have had to use deadly self defense with Craig’s List.

Check on autotrader and see what they are advertising cars with your mileage for sale at in your area. Then subtract 7-10K from that price for a trade in offer.

I usually keep a car for two to three years and I trade them in because it is easy. Kelly blue book is very close to dealer trade in value. Keep in mind the tax saving when you trade in and not having to deal with the hassle of selling privately. Now days I only buy new cars and get below invoice so I make up the cost there. Like home sales you have to know when, where, and how you will be moving forward. When I was young I bought got used cars and sold for a minor profit. Today I’m very well off so my time is money and so I use my time in buying versus selling which very rare can be foreseen. In other words, “You know you are going to lose money on mot new cars so save as much when buying them.” Keep in mind these are car buy days. So now is the time to buy- not sell.

You traded in your 17 that you wrecked for 41k and are telling him to take anything over 36k for his? A dealership has to make their money. They aren't going to pay you market value for the car. Go private party if you want to deal with that hassle.
