Hey guys just wondering if anyone has had any problems with the torsen diff during drag racing, I know they aren't ment for hitting the strip, just curious as to why they would be a problem or if anyone has had issues?

Because the worm gears are very small and delicate. Sudden shocks can shatter the gears.

The rear ends in our cars are bulletproof to begin with, the torsen helps with handling but it's good with taking hard off the line with both tires spinning at the same rate . If you want to know how the torsen rears hold up ask any gt500 owner in the s197 later models and all of the boss 302 models . never heard of a failure from the torsen

Mine failed on a 3500 rpm launch. When my torsen decided to self destruct, it took one of my Ford Racing half shafts with it. I won't launch my car again.

Oh, that was actually a easy launch. I use to launch my damn EVO at 7000 rpms while building 15psi at the launch. Had around 200 launches on that car and nothing broke.

Factory defect, how come the gt500 comes with it with a lot more horsepower and doesn't have issues. Gt500 was made for straight line too

A factory gt500 doesn't come with more HP than I am pushing. And I highly doubt a factory defect, never had issues prior. The problem with the s550 is deflection. At the time of my torsen exploding, I hadn't upgraded any of the rear IRS. The GT500 comes with a SRA which is completely different.

Horse power is normally not the issue breaking a Torsen. Most of the time is a combination of grippy tires and sudden drive train shock. My buddy has broken 3 rear diffs on his S197 5.0 running slicks.

Wasn't aware of your supercharger, my mistake there, I feel wheel hops a killer that's why I'm upgrading the irs big time along with half shafts. If half shafts don't go from wheel hop then something's gotta go

Yep, it is a must. There is so much deflection with all of the stock crap in the IRS. After I had to buy another torsen, I ordered BMR TR005, CB005, TCA045 and Viking warriors. With that setup I have zero wheel hope but I'm still adding parts. I ordered BMR BK055 and Ford racing toe bearing.

It's a must adding all of this stuff, so much slop in the irs stock I guess to prevent nvh? When you want performance like I do and you do nvh definitely doesn't matter lol

This is why the cobra jet went back to the SRA. IRS is better on the street and road course but SRA Will always be better for the strip.

Cobra jet isn't a street car so no reason for an irs anyhow, sra is better for dragging unless the irs is set up for it
