Hi Guys,

changed the the Manual transmission Fluid today on the 2017 mustang V6 manual 6 spd transmission 75,000m.
Went directly to Ford and was given 3 quarts the "Dual Clutch ATF" fluid.
All went well.
No metal on the magnet plug.

Got the car as level as possible,,, small variance in level if any.

Took the car out for a 1 hour gentle drive to let things work in.
Things felt a little sticky or notchy,,, but not enough to piss me off.

Tonight I took it out for some High rev shifts and I wasn't pleased.
At 5500 rpm shifts,,,,
-first to second was fine.
-Second to Third didn't go until the revs came down. :frown:
-Third to fourth was fine.

Seemed like a synchro issue.
No noises and low rev shifts are fine.

Is this fluid change going to take a few miles to adjust?
The shifting was great before the fluid change.
All gears are fine except second to third.
Shifting seems sticky and not as smooth before the change.
Its very quiet at all speeds too.

Any advice?

Mike

Are you sure they sold you "ATF" fluid? That might be your problem right there. ATF is Automatic Transmission Fluid.
Please post up the part# or a picture of the bottle.

The Ford dealer parts guy was pretty experienced.
Its a ATF used in these manual transmissions.
See the manual reference image for matching numbers.

That is the correct fluid then. This isn't ATF though. Had me worried there.

Give it some time to work in but don't expect it to behave like Royal Purple or Motul.

Well,,, as the bottle says its an ATF.
A lot of manufacturers use an ATF in manual transmissions.

Regardless,,, I didn't think things would get sticky.
The feel of shifting is very notchy and not very forgiving.
The wiggle/slop is gone.
Its tight and sticky compared to before.

I don't want to sound like its overwhelming,,, but its very noticable.
Will need to let this fluid work its way around the tranny.
Hoping it loosens up.

If it doesn't improve, you can always change to one of the two I mentioned above. I changed out my OEM fluid because it felt very notchy cold and even after the transmission got to full operating temperature. Now with Motul Multi DCTF it's much better. Almost no notchy feeling cold and when warmed up, it's buttery smooth.

You already took it out for an hour-it's all circulated by now. Doesn't take long with a manual transmission anyways.

Can confirm the Optimum kit is better than stock fluid.

Second that, I got the BG diff and trans oil kit from OP the other year and it really cleans up the MT82 synchro engagement. Cold weather performance wasn’t bad either, I don’t get why Ford fills these things with DCT fluid.

Motul Multi-DCTF and don’t look back.
Dump your Ford ATF or whatever they sold you and cut your losses.
Don’t buy into DCTF is the wrong fluid.

Some tips:
When you drain the fluid have the front end up higher than the rear by a few inches. Let the trans drain for a hour or so. When refilling, put the capacity into it. Don't worry about checking the level.

Thanks for the replies.

Going to add the xl-18 Ford additive first. It's a tiny bottle. But recommended.

Already spent the $$ on the new fluid.
I'm sure it's safe to use. Just need to improve things.

Ford dropped the ball on this one.
The additive is not sold at every Ford dealer and also not in the manual as a prescribed lubricant.

Thanks again.
