It sounds like maybe you think inflating a car tire is like inflating a bike tire? There is no tube. The tire is sealed against the lip of the rim and you just add air between the wheel and tire.

The tire is not an enclosed volume. Have you ever seen a tire not mounted on a rim? It's not like a tube. The air is between the rim and the tire.

Yes, this. Look closely at the pictures above of the cutaway view. The black thing is the tire. It's a C shape in cross section. It seals up against the wheel lip on the front and back of the wheel. So where the air is, is inside the C of the tire and the wheel itself that completes the enclosed space.

Interesting story. I was around 17 when I got my first flat. I was coming back from the US at the border. So the canadian border guard is asking me the usual questions and I cut him short saying "I think my tire is flat". He looks out, sees it's almost completely gone, and is like, oh shit, yeah. I asked if he could help me change it, and he taught me how to put on a spare tire.
