Don't know about getting it out without pulling the motor, but you will probably have to at least loosen the transmission and slide back a bit and pull a couple bolts out os the timing cover as the pan attaches to both. It is rtved in place, so getting it back together without messing up the fresh rtf will be a challenge to say the least.

Yeah, it's going to be easier to do it out of the car vs in the car. It could be done for sure, but given how much stuff you're gonna have to take loose anyways, I'd go ahead and pull it.

Ya it seems like it. Having so much bad luck with this motor man. Terrible. After rebuild now it's ticking again. Loud too. And sounds like something is down in the oil pan bouncing around.

I am going to go out on a limb here so bare with me .

The only thing you should be hearing from the oil pan area is the oil pump if my knowledge of the 2.3 engine serves me right ..

Waiting for your findings after you pull the engine and disassemble to examine .

By the way you are gaining valuable experience in the process to go with your frustrations ..

Be cool stay cozy .

I'd be more inclined to think it's the balance shaft assembly more so than the oil pump. The oil pump (itself) is located on the bottom right behind the timing cover. If it was making noise, it'd be up front with the timing chains.
