A newbie question: looks like Mustangs have bigger rim+tire combo diameter than many other cars (say focus, corolla, civic, etc.). Any relations between types of cars (sports, muscle, etc) and overall diameters of rim+tire?
makes sense, thanksThink about the footprint where the tire meets the road. Clearly the wider the tire is, the wider the footprint is, but the taller the tire, the longer the contact patch is, the shorter the tire, the shorter in length the contact patch is.
Wider contact patches give better lateral grip (cornering) While longer contact patches give better longitudinal grip (launching from stop or slamming on the brakes) If you look at a top fuel dragster you'll notice they use very tall rear tires.
The reason economy cars don't have larger tires (other than weight) is all that tire grip causes a lot more drag on the engine and will hurt your fuel economy.
