Has anyone else had issues with their mini-SD cards dieing in the heat?

I've now had a 64gb and a 16gb card die in the last 2 months.

I got in the car on Tuesday, ambient temp was meant to be about 38c, the temp gauge on the dash was reading 43c so god knows how hot it actually was in the car.

With the Blackvue sitting front and centre behind the rear view mirror it must have copped a roasting and when I got in it was giving the alarm "check SD card" over and over.

The camera itself seems to deal with the heat OK, but the cards don't.

It's going to get expensive real quick buying cards!
Yep, I just replaced mine in my thinkware. Constant memory card errors

Quality brands and not ebay fakes? I've never had an issue. I do generally need to format the card once a year but a card generally seems to last me around 2.5 - 3 years before it starts getting flakey from being written to so much.

In summer I do use a windscreen sun reflector thing so take the camera out of the bracket and leave it in the centre console. I figure with the camera being so exposed and then having a silver reflector behind it hammering it again wouldn't be a good idea.

My card that failed was a 64gb Samsung card. It was used in a phone before becoming the dashcam card. Lasted approx 4 - 5 months. The heat was what killed mine too, Im sure. Never had a problem in the cooler months. After one of the recent hot days my camera gave the " memory card error, system restarting " for 30 odd mins. I pulled the card out and it was very hot to the touch

Maybe an idea to get in touch with the manufacturer of your dashcams and ask them for advice on what you should do seeing as replacing an SD card every few months would get expensive and annoying particularly if you got into an accident and your SD card was toast.

Is that 29 Euro each or for a set of 2?

I thought that the front & rear attached differently.
They are sold separately and you are correct, they do attach differently.

The front lens clips on directly from the front whilst the rear slides on from the side and is secured by the loop.

The total cost of both shipped to Sydney was around $85 AUD.

Both were the Blackvue branded cards, I think they might be Samsung.

Latest DCOA crash compilation.

Some rippers in here.

That's one of the best/worst ones yet - lots of carnage in this one

Samsung is not recommended for warranty reasons.
See here: https://www.carcamcentral.com/guide/recommended-sd-cards-avoid-sandisk-ultra-cards
"Their cards are great but their policies prohibit use in a dash camera. For their MLC Samsung Pro/Pro+ it has this note beside their 10-year warranty. “Warranty is limited for any type of surveillance system.” Reaching out to Samsung Service I received this response:

“Samsung SD Cards and Micro SD Cards are not intended to be used for continuous recording purposes for example, in surveillance systems such as a car-black box. The reason for this is because the card may fail with constant and obsessive reading and writing. They are not designed to be constantly and continuously written to.”

Second email to clarify if there is a warranty:
“It would be a case by case basis. If the card would fail within its warranty period we would have to review the case.”

Although that's for Pro and Pro+, so not sure about their EVO cards. Guessing it'll be under similar policy.

Edit: Just found this : https://dashcamsaustralia.com.au/dash-cam-buyers-guide/ and they do recommend Samsung EVO.

I will continue to use what works for me.

If it craps out I'll be $60 out of pocket.

Yeh absolutely, if it's not broken then don't fix it. If it's working there's no reason why you would want to change it. If you're buying a new one, then at least stay away from Sandisk since it seems like that's the one that's universally not recommended for dashcams for various reasons.

My pleasure mate.

I must sound like a Thinkware ambassador sometimes, but it really is a good piece of kit.

Strongly consider the polarising lenses too - they make a world of difference.
