Nope. Specs are available on mfg sites to see this.
5w20 more viscous vs 0w20 at 100C.

Ok, I went straight to Amsoil's website and looked at their viscosity indexes for various oil grades.

0w20 and 5w20 have virtually the same viscosity at 212*

At the same time 0w30, 5w30 and 10w30 have once again pretty much the same viscosity at 212*

Where they differ of course is their viscosity when cold.

Not more of ratfuck and his incorrect method of picking oil...please. For the love of god
You wouldn't want an oil with a higher film strength for those cold starts in the morning? What 540RAT says makes sense to me regarding this

I'm interested in running a bearing analysis for the different viscosities. I'm having trouble finding info on the 2015-2017 coyote. Can anyone tell me the following: rod bearing journal diameter, rod bearing effective length, and diametrical clearance range for the rod bearing?

I found some details on the older coyote engines, but I'm unsure if any details changed.

Just to close my loop on this, I ran a track day last weekend with the 5W20 and had zero issues. Pressure stayed up near 70 lbs all day long and temperature was in the normal range as well. Two other guys there with PP S550 Mustangs, both using 5W20 as well and neither of them had any issues either. We ran 5 half hour sessions. If I was racing I'd be guided by my engine builder, but it looks like that for HPDE type track events the 5W20 is fine.

Here's the detailed engine specs of the S550 motor. Page 4 has crank and rod info.

What do you have for the older models?

What I found has rod journals 0.005" smaller on diameter for the s197 coyote. The bearing clearances I found were the same for the s197 5.0L.

Neither has axial length of the rod bearings but I can make an assumption. I'll be making more than a few (which I will describe) to simplify the analysis. I'm really looking for relative changes in oil film thickness (100% the 5w20 will have less film but is it small enough at higher temps that it is concerning and what are the gains by switching viscosity).

I stand corrected. 10 years ago I recall it being a compromise at track temps of 230-240.
I would check Mobil1, Shell(QS,Pennz), etc.
Any data at 250F on those?

Have tracked FI w 5w20,5w30,0w40,running5w30 atm as its cooling off and go 5w20 all winter including track.

Also, the (2015-17)oil passage restrictions (heads) are different sizes for 5.2 and 5.0 heads and if you run a 5.2 oil pump on a 5.0, or run 5.2 heads on a 5.0, the restrictors might need to be changed.
The Ford doc on it is w the 5.2 heads for 5.0 stuff on FRPP site.

I usually use Mobil 1, but went with castrol magnatec 5w20 today. We'll see how it goes.

Can't they? When Ford says everywhere you look 5W-20 for the S550 Mustang GT I'd say they sure can bitch and potentially refuse a warranty claim. 5W50 is recommended nowhere by Ford for this car which is not a GT350 with a flat plane crank. Two totally different engines.

Your car, your money, your choice.

5-50 is a upgrade and you want an oil for track work. That's what this oil was designed for, in opinion it is superior to mobil one.

JD unless you had an oil analysis done you have no idea if you were breaking down that oil. Do a search an read that 14 page report on all different brands and you'll find that 5-50 motorcraft is one the very best oils for racing.

No that are not totally different engines, coyote and voodoo

I am using 5w 20 Castrol Magnatec and really like it, no track duty yet. Anyone using the Ford Racing oil filter which hold an additional 1/2 qt. oil?
