Have you ever heard someone say "wow, that car is a manual ". Just curious.
Just about every time someone checks out my car they comment on the manual transmission, and in good way.

Especially the younger guys. It’s like they’re seeing a unicorn.

Yep. Happened just the other day. Some doofus in a big pick up truck next to me at the gas station. He asked me if it was manual or auto as I was filling up. I didn't answer right away and he looked into the car and said "Oh, cool - manual!" (It's not)

I just said, "Yeah, cool!"

I thought the suffering was reserved for us as they easily gap us from a light?
It's only "our suffering" if - or when - we choose to let it.

Most such times I can't help but wonder if the driver in the faster AT car is having fun racing against . . . himself.

I love my 2019 Bullitt which is a Manual. However I do also love my 2020 GT500 and it's DCT. Both have its Pros and Cons but in the end they both make me smile.

If modern science devises a way to measure the "soul" of inanimate objects, then determines that automatics actually have more "soul power", what mental gymnastics will manual drivers move on to?

When manual transmissions were faster, manual drivers would proudly say it.
Keep in mind that back in those days, the AT drivers had nothing to fall back on. Slushy shifting and even worse fuel economy didn't work very well for soothing bruised egos.

Now that automatics are faster, manual drivers sputter about "giving up all the fun" and the car having no "soul".

Hate to break it to you buddy, but the "soul" doesn't live in any one part. The "fun" isn't in any single pedal. They're in the whole car, packed in tip to tail.
"Soul" is about the only one word explanation that even begins to fit.

Yes, it's about the whole car . . . plus the driver's interaction with it. When any part of that is missing, the "whole" isn't so "whole" any more. Now whether that matters to anybody is a separate question related to individual perception.

I'd rather be slower because of my choices and limits on my own ability than faster because of somebody else's design or programming skill.

I'm not making that up.

Curious...do you then disable your anti-lock braking system?

I've actually had the ABS go inop (on a couple different cars). When it happened in the Mustang at HPDE I ended up running slightly faster laps with the ABS inop than I could with it active (same day).

So yeah, I very well might. At least for experimenting with various front vs rear track pad formulations.

Keep in mind that I'd been driving non-ABS cars for almost 40 years before buying the first car that had ABS.

In all the manual vs. auto discussions, I have always understood why some find it more fun to drive a manual (and I am even looking to get one myself), but after 3 threads about this in a row, I am beginning to think the the manual folks have just developed a complex.
