Hello,

I wanted to start a build log of my AWD conversion of a 2017 Mustang GT PP1.

I started this project a bit over two years ago, up to this point taking the car apart and cutting things up to mock up the components. I have a plan to get the front diff to fit, make the spindles and adapt the transfer case to the transmission.

I purchased the car in Sept of 19 for the sole purpose of converting it to AWD. I have been planning this for 20 years:)

I have already done another AWD conversion and I am an mechanical engineer by profession. I am confident I can pull it off.

First question is why?

Quite simply I am an AWD fanatic and a Mustang guy. I have owned 12 AWD cars and several 4wd trucks.
IMHO NOTHING is more exhilarating then the rush of a high HP AWD acceleration run.

Here is my old project.

A couple of videos:

The Merkur has done a best of [email protected] in the quarter on pump gas and street tires. It is a stick:)

Here is the Mustang the day is what delivered.

Like I mentioned, I have been mostly in the planning/mock up stage so far.

Here is the plan:
Transmission: TR6060
Transfer Case: BW 44 40 from a Dodger Charger
Front Diff: Toyota low pinion 7.5 with Truetrac diff.
Front Spindles: fabricated
Custom CV axles

Once the AWD is sorted, then some sort of boost. I have always been a turbo person, but I may throw on a supercharger just to prove out the AWD system.

Here are some mock up pics.

I am basically going to start over again with a new front crossmember and oil pan.

More to come!

Very Interesting! Do you think the front Diff: Toyota low pinion 7.5 with Truetrac diff. will be able to handle the Coyote torque?

What are the engine/turbo etc. specs on the XR4ti? Do you have a build page, more videos?

I am a fan of XR4ti/Turbocoupe/SVO cars, my '88 T-bird was a great car until too many New England winters made it tough to go on.

I am very confident. I think it is overkill. In general a low pinion is not as good as a high pinion in a front diff application. But in this case it just makes the packaging much easier. I spent months trying to fit a GM 7.2 IFS diff in the front since I am familiar with them, but no dice.

I use to have a build website, but is is gone. Here are the basics:
327 R302 bases short block
8:1 compression (to maximize pump gas potential)
AFR185 heads
RPM II intake
Custom 226/226 cam
Precision 74mm turbo, 15-17 psi
Holley HP EFI

Based on the weight and 1/4 MPH it is about 650-700 hp.

xr4x4ti what happened to the Merkur, still have it?

Also, I am laying down a challenge for you: when you finish with this awd S550-you have to keep the working a/c system. No pulling out a/c parts to make this conversion work.

I still have the Merkur and tweak on it. I did some 1/8 mile airport speed runs with it this last fall.

As far as the Mustang goes, yes, 1000%, the goal is to keep it civilized. AC/Cruise, heated/cooled seats, reasonably quiet, etc.

The is one of the issues with the Merkur now. For many years it was a quiet and smooth 500hp car. Then I got bored and decided to make it more of a science experiment. I put a roll bar in it so I could go back to the track. I put a higher flowing exhaust in which really freed up the power, but now it is much louder and I solid mounted the rear diff. The car is crazy fast, but it is not something you want to commute to work with. I want the Mustang to be a 700+ hp AWD capable daily driver.

That’s a tidy looking Sierra! You don’t see many XR4i’s these days. Is that a Cossie front bumper on it?

As another ME and oddball project proponent, I approve.

I like the Merkur. A lot.

I think it is, but it’s a 4i shell based on the split rear window.

I sold a three door shell (with single rear window) to someone that was doing a 4x4 Cosworth conversion :sunglasses:
