Just because it is kinda sorta on topic, has there been a review for the 3.7l JDM tune? I haven't seen one on YouTube or here.

Do these outfits offer a 91 tune? Even the gas stations around me who say they have 93 dont really, not the three Ive checked.

But I do see 91 pretty much everywhere.

As a rule they offer 87, 89, 91 and 93. and E85 possibly (which is more like E50 in some seasons/markets).

If a gas station is selling '93' but it isn't within tolerances, there is something very wrong with the DoT fuel inspection or a tanker truck dumped the wrong fuel into the wrong tank. You'd have to ask the tuner the nuances between his various tunes when keyed off octane but it's probably localized to how aggressive is the initial timing and upper and lower bounds. The ECU will adjust behavior (eg. pull timing) on observed factors (knock sensors etc) but it's better that the tune not try to push an engine over the edge in the first place rather than rely on "self-preservation" logic to kick in and in time not to do bad things.

If '91' is generally what is what your local area has, then just ask for the '91' tune.

I just ordered a Tuner and two custom tunes from Unleashed Tuning yesterday.
My car is a 2017 V-6 convertible with 6-spd auto and 3.31 gearing.
Stock now, but also ordered a Roush CAI and a set of Roush Axle-Backs.

Need some advice ref Octane I should request in the tunes?

My area has all grades, so I guess at least one of then should be 93.
What about the other, should I pick an 87 in case fuel prices skyrocket again?
Or get an 89 to go with the 93...?

This car will never see a track, driven by an older guy who has owned 5.o Mustangs and is getting a bit older!
I want to just cruise around, but desire better response and a more mellow sound.

TIA!

Mike

I say 87 and 93. You run 93 because that's the best performance, you run 87 because you're a cheap ass. Never go half ass, go full ass either way.

I am just not sure how to take "go full ass" ....I'll struggle with that for a bit lol.

93 isn't really retard, but I was channeling this meme from Dota 2:

Based on all the reports I see of issues with questionable '93 gas, I would do a '91 tune but use '93 gas with it.

It's really the same thing either way, just one might show higher knock but either way you're probably getting similar power because the resulting timing is about equal (this is all just me guessing, don't take this as fact by any means).

I think the better way to go about it is to datalog on the gas you are most likely to use consistently and send a datalog every 6 months to 1 year just to have it checked out. If they tune for your gas, it should be getting you the best it can be on that gas without trying to play it safe by doing a 91 tune.

93 at Chevron is definitely above 93 at Generic Station Y.

When the gas is right you will always feel and know the difference between a 91 and 93 octane if your car is tuned properly. And its a considerable difference IMO.

I get all that but my thought was to use the 91 tune as a precautionary step until you are sure about the gas. Still better than 87.

On my 5.7 Hemi I got the best results running a custom 91 tune with 93 gas.
