I guess my question really is, should we be going to a thicker oil above a certain power level... no this is not Mobil vs Castrol or valvoline etc etc.

I've been running 5w30 since I was N/A and kicked up the RPM to 8k. Now boosted going to 7500, found no reason to switch.

5w20 street and drag strip (cold passes) and where ā€˜sustainedā€™ CHT below 230F.
For tracks days I go by max sustained CHT:
190-220 5w20
225-240 5w30 or 0w40
240-250 5w50(wait CHT 210 before WOT)

Whippled 650 rwhp on road courses.

It might be possible to go WOT w 5w50 on cold motor and break opg. PM broke opg peeps.

The oil pump housing, filter bypass, bypass springs and flow restrictors in our heads are different vs voodoo that runs 5w50. Putting 5w50 in a coyote does not make it a voodoo.

There is so much more to this question than most responses you will get. You might as well have asked Android or iPhone lol. I will tell you what I use and why but you can spend a 1000 hours reading about oil and still not get the answer you want. After countless hours reading, and forming my own opinion from the information I collected, I decided to switch to Mobil1 0w40. The biggest reason for me is that I am revving the car to 8k and shear stability is extremely important for that. Some oils will shear from a 20 down to a 10 which is scary. Temperature can play a part in that as well but itā€™s not something I want to find out the hard way. Most true synthetics are pretty resistant to really bad shearing from what I read. Never the less, I push my car hard and have made 60 or so passes this season alone and Iā€™m trying to do anything I can to make the motor last. These new 0w40 oils are there are very high quality and I ā€œfeelā€ better protected this way. This is just me but I would never run a 5w20 revving the car over stock rpm. There is so much more to it but without getting into additives and this and that, Iā€™m doing what I feel is best based on my research.

That all being said, if you are running a purely street car where you do WOT for 1 gear here and there with some occasional trips to the strip, probably not going to matter a ton.

The best thing you canā€™t do is research a specific oil you want to use and try to find test results on it.

My 2 cents
