Looking to buy a GoPro to record races and snorkel with the wife every now and then. Is the GoPro hero+ ($199 at Best Buy) ok for this or should I go up the the hero3? School me on this as I've never been big into cameras. Thanks.

Basically if you go up from the base model your resolutions and frame rates improve. You should probably think about what you want to record in and go from there. The current offerings new are Session (max of 1440p 30fps), silver (max 1080p 60fps) and Black, (max 4k 30fps)

If its mostly for fun and you can find a hero 3 silver or black still that may be all you really need and they will do 1080p recording.

The gopro hero4 black takes the best pictures in most situations but you dont have a lcd screen on back. If you care about the screen get the gopro hero4 silver. The hero 4s have much improved photo quality. I have 2 gopro hero4 blacks.

I basically just want to record mainly track races and friendly encounters on the road
Reread my original post. If you care about what you record being good quality and not meh looking get the Hero4 black. It records better in low light/night and daytime. If youre wanting to be cheap buy whatever your budget can afford.

Good point, didn't consider night time videos.

If 499 is more then you're willing/able to spend for a hero4 black bundle try to find a used bundle or get a hero3 black bundle. While the 3 isnt as good its better then the other 3s in low light iirc.

Go big or go home. Hero 4 Black if you're willing to pay for it, the 4k can be cool if you know what to do with it.

mustang_guy has a good point also. I have a Hero 3 Black and my video comes out just as good as any 4 footage any of my friends have gotten.
