Wheel Scuff

Managed to kerb a wheel today! - a little annoyed with myself to say the least! However, the damage isn't as bad as I thought. It's only scraped the very edge of the rim and only appears to have affected the clearcoat.

It doesn't seem bad enough to warrant a professional repair so was wondering if any of you detailers out there might have some tips on a DIY solution.

I thought about lightly rubbing the area down and giving it a fresh coat of clear lacquer either from a pen or a spray can. My only worry with the spray can is that the overspray might show.

Any suggestions?

Sorry can't help.....I can make parts, I can fit parts, I can modify bits n bobs.....

But whenever I try to touch somthing up with a spray can, etc I guarantee I'll F**k it up good and proper....:lol::lol:

I do a good job, and then always go back just to finish it off......and that it, total mess, start again and pay someone who know what they're doing:lol:

And he fixed my corsa's proper messed up offside alloy that was mangled etc. Top quality bloke too... Is it worth the drive for though... Probably cost more in petrol!

Definitley pay for a pro. if you want to do it yourself, gloss black paint, filling putty (if needed) sanding paper of different grits and go wild... then just wait 2-3days and polish the excess off... Works for a 6ft job, but if you want it to look OEM and fresh, a pro.

It is annoying but, being a daily driver and with the ever increasing parking issues at work, it was going to happen sooner or later and I don't expect it will be the last time either.

That taken into account, a pro job might be best left until I've picked up a few more!

As long as I don't make it worse than it is (which is entirely possible) I'm happy to give it a go myself. it just looks a bit grey where the clearcoat has been 'roughed up', so a lick of lacquer from a pen might just take the edge of.

I know someone who knows someone who allegedly would do it for free, but is 80 miles away so it would cost me a bit in fuel.

Left a mess

There was still hope that it'd all buff out (in my own mind), but wiped off 'dust' and horrible gash

Quickly put some black touch up paint on there to hide the mark best I could for the time being.

Looks like the tyre doesn't give much protection. Another mark down for the OEM tyre or is it more down to the design of the wheel?

Black touch up pen is better than nothing. I'm having someone look at mine tomorrow. At least with silver alloys the scuffs are less noticeable. But mine are black!

I think that for the Mustang with black wheels although the initial scuff results in a horrendous silver gash the touch up pen is enough to almost completely hide the damage so that in effect only you know it is there. On the other hand if you scuff up the silver alloys only a refurb will hide the damage,

So I bit the bullet and went for a 'professional' repair yesterday. Chips Away for £35. No sign of the original scuff and colour match and finish is pretty much spot on. Then, I suddenly thought, what if it was done with the wheel on and the affected area right over the Brembo calliper? No, no-one would make such a school boy error? One would rotate the wheel so that the area you were spraying was over the exposed disc - that way any overspray would be duly worn off with braking.

Upon inspection I now have faint black stripes all over the Brembo logo!

I'll be phoning Chips Away in the morning with suggestions of how to remove it without damaging the original finish before the paint fully cures, if it hasn't already!

Unbelievable! How hard is it to get a job done well these days...
This is why i wont pay anyone to do work on my house if i can do it myself. Cos i care enough to do my best.

Very difficult it would seem! Should've gone down the DIY route, might not have got as good a finish, but certainly wouldn't have caused further damage and would have been less hassle and about £30 cheaper. I haven't paid yet and don't intend to without an effort to put it right.
