I am getting my car ready for the 4th of July Parade on Thursday, and I have not cleaned the exhaust tips since my engine replacement for excessive oil consumption. so I tried a scrubbing sponge, did not work, I tried metal polish, even broke out the dremel polishing wheel and jewelers rouge red and white and moved to 0000 steelwool. nothing works. could the oil have etched the stainless steel?

I think the steel wool you used scratched them up......you probably need to take various steps of polishing them to get the scratches out. I also learned a lesson the hard way about using steel wool...

I can’t tell very well from the pictures but it looks like they are coated with a varnish. Maybe from oil consumption?

Have you tried acetone to clean the stainless before polishing?

Also I find semi chrome works great for what you are doing.
