When I was 17 I had a '67 Camaro with a built engine, cammed, about 350 hp and did just fine in the snow. Just know your car and take it easy in snow. Use common sense and keep your distance from other vehicles.

No real need to start in 2nd if you just turn on the wet/snow drive mode. It limits throttle to the point where it is almost impossible to spin from my use of it during heavy rain fall.

Get used to starting in 2nd gear. Really helps to keep traction by limiting the rotational speed of the tires.

No, what starting in 2nd limits is the torque sent to the drive wheels.

Relative to engine speed, 2nd gear runs the wheels faster than 1st does, not slower. The fact that 2nd has a harder time breaking them loose is what's important here. You might have to slip the clutch just a little more than you do when starting in 1st, though.


Be careful about downshifting in the snow or slush or on ice, as this can partially lock the rear wheels which will then try to slide in most any direction but the one you want to go in.

X2. The wet/snow mode pretty much takes care of needing to pay special attention when taking off. I'd just be careful about downshifting.
