I emptied mine from the top on the weekend and there was no problem. I suppose by damage you could cross thread the top as it's a screw in but I'd be more afraid of doing something similar to the bottom nut. The top went on without a problem. I wiped the oil residue out of the thread (very minimal it must be said) re sealed the can and I ran the car at idle for 5 minutes to test thing so like seals. There were no problems that I could detect.

Next 1000km I'll try doing it the UPR way :)
I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to these things, never had a catch can before, and my initial assumption was to empty can as you stated, looked like the most obvious option :headbonk:. But then I read post below and tried that method and could not get the nut off :frusty:

What part numbers do you and your wife have? We use Loctite to seal all our catch cans now except for the small radiator mount cans that you remove the bottoms to drain. The 5028 cans all get unscrewed to drain and never need to be cranked too tight as they were designed just to be snugged to be easily drained.

The 5030 cans like the one you have pictured are not to be opened. If you open the 5030 catch cans they will lock up on the side fitting and destroy the internal diffuser assembly and strip the threads on the top. Internals have been designed so you never open them and they do not require any servicing more than just to be drained.

Once you open the 5030 you might damage the o-ring because everything is sealed shut.

PM before you go any further.

I can confirm that there was no loctite on the upper opening of my catch can and the can opened easily and closed just as snugly. I have run the car for two days to and from work and there are no leaks, no weird noises or other indicators that suggest I've buggered it up.

But as is suggested I'll try to empty the can the preferred way next time
