UPDATE: After only 500 or so miles look what my can captured (bottom pic). Thanks UPR!

First, I would have bought the double-valve system had I known it existed. That being said, the car is my wife's daily driver and WOT will never occur (unless I'm driving of course..:D) So, I ordered the single valve catch can from UPR for $169 and some change. Here is my after action review:

  1. When ordering, pay attention to the options. There are satin, black and polished finishes. I was wanting a black unit but the default is "satin" so not paying attention (seeing a pattern here?) I ordered and received the satin variant.
  2. The system came packaged very nicely and all the items had a look and feel of high quality. I decided I could paint the mounting bracket attachment knob and mounting screw (black) and leave the can satin.
  3. One interesting observation is the system came without any instructions whatsoever. No problem right? Just go to the UPR web-page and download the PDF file (or watch the video) Wrong! No instructions to be found anywhere at the UPR web page. Fortunately there is that one video of the gentleman installing one in a yellow mustang. It got me in the ball park, and anyway, real men don't need directions.
  4. Come install time, I laid out all the parts, watched the video a couple of more times and commenced with removing the stock hose between the intake and oil pan. The gentleman in the video made it look easy to do with a screw driver but I thought he was undoing the connectors from the bottom. Actually, (I think) he was pushing down on the tops of the connectors to disengage them. I ended up just prying the damn things up with a screw driver, breaking the one on the intake side and somehow miraculously undoing the one on the oil pan side (I couldn't see the end of the oil pan side hose, so everything was by feel). Took the hose off and now time to connect the two hoses from UPR.
  5. At this point I wasn't sure if the hoses were interchangeable or not. I remembered reading something about a check valve and small arrows showing which way the flow should go. Since then, I've learned on the single valve unit, there are no check valves or arrows (thanks dragonacc for clearing that up for me); just plug the hoses in at the intake and oil pan (swivel connector) sides and route them to where the catch can is going to be mounted (driver's side). NOTE: Best to attach the intake side hose from the front (like the video) and then route back to the catch can.
  6. With the hoses plugged-in and routed, it was time to mount the mounting bracket. Upon closer examination, I found the bracket to be a little crude and when mounted, the end closest to the firewall mashed up against the brake hydraulic lines (right behind the strut mount). With a little effort I was able to jam it into place and get the little hex screw tightened.
  7. After mounting the bracket, I attached the catch can with the knurly knob and plugged-in the two hoses. For all intents and purposes, I was done. However, I still had a question in my mind about check valves. I took the car for a drive and was pleased to observe the car didn't throw any trouble codes.
  8. The overall install looked clean but the mounting bracket still bugged me. I was worried over time the end would rub against and possible rupture one of the hydraulic lines. I got the idea to shorten the bracket and make the end towards the firewall curve with the mounting tab (on the car).
  9. I cut the bracket just past the middle mounting screw hole, and used a bench grinder to smooth and curve the one end. It actually turned-out pretty good. I re-painted the bracket and re-installed everything.
  10. Overall I'm very pleased with the UPR single valve catch can system. A set of instructions would probably be a good idea and I think the mounting bracket could be refined just a little.. Can't wait to see if I catch any oil!
That's my UPR catch can install after action. I'll attach a couple of pictures for your viewing pleasure. Happy 4th of July!
