Can someone explain to me how these work? I had traction control turned ON yesterday and I made a U turn and gave it some gas on purpose to see what would happen and the back end came around. Also when going WOT the tires will spin. My last car was a 300whp Mazdaspeed 3 and with traction control on it would cut power once the tires broke loose.

Traction control is not just used for improving acceleration under slippery conditions. It can also help a driver to corner more safely. If too much throttle is applied during cornering, the drive wheels will lose traction and slide sideways. This occurs as understeer in front wheel drive vehicles and oversteer in rear wheel drive vehicles. Traction control can prevent this from happening by limiting power to the wheels.

The other night it was raining and while leaving from a red light I applied more gas than normal to spin the tires and the back end started to come around....I have yet to see what traction control ON has done for me, then again I have never turned it off.

Traction control does definitely limit the power to keep you from spinning. It will however not correct being stupid(not that you were being stupid).

In my experience setting this car in track mode, when you're sideways and on full throttle it limits power until the lateral g's dive down and the car is straightening out.

Both times I was the only car on the road, but I dont have different driving modes on the base GT:thumbdown:

Good explanation . . .

. . . but good, skilled driving does not include bumping up into the nannies except on the rarest of occasions. The number of driving modes or how restrictive/lenient they might be is completely irrelevant here. Your U-turn episode (at least) gets a pass because you were intentionally trying to see what would happen.

FWIW, I've never found the TC in my '08 to be worth the electrons I'm buying as part of my electric and phone bills to type this and send it. Whether TC is any better in the new cars is anybody's guess, but in your case it seems like maybe it's not . . . which may not be a bad thing.

Situations where I bump into traction and/or stability control:

- Driving on snow
- Getting unstuck from a snowbank (they have to be shut off there or it's impossible)
- Driving at highway speeds over uneven pavement (hit even a 4" pothole and the back axle comes off the ground and you get wheel spin)
- Accelerating up a hill in the rain

Aside from that, they don't normally come into play.

You can overcome some of the traction control logic by using far too much throttle, but it won't 'sound' right.

I spun the tires on purpose last weekend, but forgot traction control was on. It spins, but comes and goes, not a full on out of control spin of the tires. People were laughing.

Try taking traction control off then do the same thing, you'll see a big difference.

I have a 2019 10 spd so today I gunned it in sport mode with paddle shifters and in 3rd it cut off power completely wasn’t able to accelerate and then I saw for a quick sec the traction light came on then off but it was the one next to “S” ( P R N D S) so I don’t know if cut off power because of traction or something is wrong with the traction control module or something. My car didn’t swerve or anything
