"The Real Thing"

If you've never seen this, it's a great short watch. This restomod has made its way to Jay Leno's Big Dog Garage before and debuted at the 2010 SEMA Show.

The Real Thing is a short documentary about custom hot rod builder Bodie Stroud and his re-imagining of a classic Mustang by way of an extremely rare and powerful motor built specifically for legendary racer Mario Andretti's 1969 Can Am series race car.

Nicknamed ā€œThe Real Thingā€, the 1969 Mustang might not appear that much different than other restomods out there, but what really sets the car apart is what’s under the hood. Powering the Mustang is a 494 cubic inch aluminum V8 originally built to power one of Mario Andretti’s Can-Am cars in 1969. Only ten of the engines were made, with this one dyno tested at an incredible 777 horsepower. Making the Mustang even more unique is that the unibody has been separated and put on a custom chassis to help it handle like a modern sports car.

Awesome, this is the kind of stuff that makes you really appreciate the history behind this car and part of why I love it.

Good find, thanks for sharing. Seeing things like this makes me wish I had the time, space and resources to do this kind of thing.
