I am in the process of purchasing a GTPP. I am currently active duty military and considering registering this vehicle in NY as it is still my home of record. I am tired of constantly having to register my vehicles in a new state every time I transfer and I probably have 3 more transfers before i retire. On the DMV site, I saw an auto sales tax deferment for military personnel who are residents of NY but currently living in a different state on orders. According to form DTF803 off the NYS DMV site :
Note: upon discharge, separation, or release from active duty, or upon being stationed or quartered within NYS, the purchaser must pay any sales and use tax due if the purchaser continues to use the motor vehicle in NYS.
What if I settle down in another state 5 yrs from now and register all my vehicles there. Who do I still pay taxes to?
What if i sell the vehicle before I get out the military?
