I guess due to the new format of the site my sig pic is gone and I've tried many ways to bring it back.
What is the secret?

You have to edit your sig. Re-insert the pic. But you cant copy and paste it. It needs a web link. If you dont have a web hosting site, simply edit an old post of yours, add the pic of choice, save changes. Then copy the "image location" of the recently added pic. Now that you have it as a web link go back to your sig and add it.

So it looks like the web address shows up, not the pic itself. This also happened when I used my google pics as a host. There must be something silly I am doing wrong...

Make sure you are using the image icon and not the link icon from the menu. Is the icon in between the smile face and the chain link. Also, How big is the PIC you trying to use? IIRC the image should be small. Maybe 200x200 or 150x150.
