I finally took a peek at installation opportunities on my 400A Mustang. I'm pretty sure this will all apply to 401A (Shaker Pro) as I believe the run the same front amp for the speakers, and a supplementary amp for the subwoofer which is separate from this particular install. This is just one option for install, which I like due to the low cost, and factory-like integration.
The factory amp is located on the left side on the driver's side, to the left of the clutch. It appears to have 3 connections - one for audio in from the head unit, one for remote turn on and noise cancellation, and one for output to the speakers. As this system (based on schematics provided by other user) show to have a full range output for each speaker into the amplifier, I believe this amp could be removed altogether and a small 4 channel amp installed in its place. You would lose out on "noise cancellation" which I believe only applies to the Ecoboost. You could always tap the wires that come out of the amplifier, but I'm not sure if the crossover for speakers happens at the amplifier, or somewhere in the doors.
The factory amplifier is about 7-1/2 to 7-3/4" long, about 5-3/4" wide, and 1-1/2" deep at the biggest part. I found a Pioneer amp (and I'm sure there are others) that measures all dimensions about the same, but half the width: Pioneer GM-D1004, rated to put out 45w RMS x 4 @ 4ohm. Again, I am sure there are other options. You could probably fit 2 amps in there.
The reason I bring this topic up is to inform of possibilities for installation, but also to get some opinions on options, experiences, and expertise. Are my assumptions correct? Full range signal into amp? What effect does noise cancellation have, especially on the GT, if any?
Does anyone know of some connectors that can utilize a plug and play style, or does everything need to be spliced?
Let's get this started.
