Rough Patch...

Well, it looks like hardship is upon the household lately... First I have a teenager come down with Strep throat, no big deal other than my insurance sucks, and it was $160 out of pocket for her to be seen... Then my 5 year old son gets it... Another $160... No big deal, we'll make due! Then my son goes in for his 6 month dental cleaning, and they say he has a small cavity, and they don't do ANY pediatric dentistry, so they refer us to a specialist, and now we're paying completely out of pocket for that exam, which was $125. Tomorrow he goes in for oral surgery, because what WAS an alleged "small cavity" was somehow overrun with the strep bacteria and became an abscess, and now it has to be removed, and a spacer put in place. That's another $800 gone...
My company just held a meeting to let us know that someone screwed up our contract with the USMC, and we're all unemployed in 2 weeks. That's $65k a year gone, which supports my family of 5.
I've been ground pounding my resume and applications, but the market is bleak, so it looks like I may have to go to Kuwait or Afghanistan, just to avoid getting too far behind financially... This. Just. Sucks.

Yeah, job loss is a burden nobody wants to endure, feel for you, hope in the near future you are back up on your feet, stay positive.

Shit, you are better than most... you have the option of going to Kuwait or Afgha for money. What if those options did not exist? That is the reality for many people.

You should be happy about that at least. Friend of mine has fam of four and no options. I'm not sure what he is going to do.... his situation is bleak.

Sucks you will have to leave your family... I feel you there.

And hopefully the two options provide you with enough cash to cover what you make now. Is it still "tax free" over there?

The first $90-$100k is tax free, not sure on specifics yet. Your friend can go overseas, they just have to be willing to accept the time away from family as well as the inherent dangers. Just about anyone can, unless they're a felon or drug user, there are positions for just about every trade there. The only reason it's any simpler for me is that I have held jobs that maintained my security clearance after I got out of the Army in 2003, so it's more appealing to the company, as they won't have to spend $60k to put me in JPAS.

Make sure that you have a LinkedIn profile and complete all the information including expertise. experience, certifications and ask people for referrals.

Yeah, I've been staying on top of it, my Dice profile is pretty strong, and a few things in the works but only 1 is local. I'm focusing my efforts on that position, and keeping Afghanistan as a backup.
