Roll cage

Does anybody have a roll cage for their car yet? if you do please post pics.
I am looking to do a cage. not a full one, but I was planning on taking the rear seats out, and making my own rear seat delete, then bolting in a half cage and finding some race seats with a 5 point harness. only problem is, the only seats I can seem to find are the recaros and cost around 2500, and I cannot find the cage that is prefabricated. ugh. any suggestions?

Sounds like you want a roll bar, not a roll cage. A cage will surround the driver and provide not only rollover protection but side impact protection as well, among many other things.

Maximum Motorsports makes roll bars for the S197 and I'm sure they will make one for the S550, assuming the S197 version doesn't already fit.

I was also interested in these seats, but have not had the chance to sit in them...

the description says they will fit a 36 inch waist..which is what I have. they also have a seat that is wider and made for up to a 42 inch waist. has anybody had any experience mounting this type of seat? also any experience with this brand? (corbeau)
I looked at bride and recaro as well, but the price point on these is very attractive.

(it says they are for truck and jeep, but I found another site that says they are for cars. cant give a link because my work computer blocks that site.)

I'm not sure if those are certified. I am a fan of Sparco. I've had a few of their seats. For reference I'm 6'2" 200lbs with a 34/35 waist I fit really well in the Sparco Ergo Medium (this one had a removavable halo to prevent your head from flying out of the car in an accident). I've also had a Sparco Evo and Sparco Evo 2. I fit a bit more snug in the standard evo over the evo 2.
Sparco seats are all certified and most are compatible with a HANS device.

Auto power and cortex makes bolt in roll bars as well.

What are your plans for the car?

Road racing or drag racing? I see a lot of people rolling 10s without cages or bars on test and tune night but I think you need one for 10.99 or faster at most tracks or in comp. At the minimum get swing out bars with the bar. - 6 point and one that could be NHRA certified.

Maybe a stupid question / statement, but I had heard at one point from a "racer" that roll-cages in street cars / DD are more dangerous when driven without helmet. I only heard this from him but it sort of stuck in my mind and this post seems like a group that would opinions on this. The reasoning was severe head injury could occur in side impacts with no helmet. Seems logical I guess.

In addition he said 4 or 5 point harness's should never be used or worn without a roll cage in a DD, better chance to get crushed in a roll over. The 3 point system allows the body to roll out apparently during the roll. This one makes more sense, the roll cage in a DD still has me scratching my head.

If the bars are in such a place that you can hit your head on it, then yes it's a huge safety issue.

Never heard that about 5 pt harness. Hard to believe since one of the mechanics of injuries is being thrown around, designing a system to allow you to be thrown a bit seems counter intuitive. Plus, when's the last time you've seen a completely crushed passenger compartment due to rollover? Structural integrity is much better now than before. Sure, something heavy falling on top will do it. But rolling out wouldn't be efficient then and you probably couldn't react. So I think I that second thought isn't credible.

well its going to get tracked. not just auto cross. the car makes more then enough power for me, now its just about getting the safety thing down.
I don't really want to throw it on a track (nor do I think anyone would allow it) without the proper safety equipment. I also don't want to spend money on useless parts that are not certified by the right people...
it will be a daily driver as well.
edit - do you know if any of the reclining sparcos are certified?

I've had corbeau seats and seats in the past. I'd say with seats you pretty much get what you pay for. Also fixed back seats are not very comfortable for daily driving. I have fixed back seats,5 point harnesses and an roll cage in my jeep. I had to drive it that way for 6 months and it was pretty miserable.

I definitely plan on getting reclining seats... I would love the recaros that come in the new mustang. but for 2500 that's a hefty price tag. probably worth it though.

If you do any competitive racing some require certified seats but I've never ran into that issue. Not sure if the factory Recaros are. Kind of like a Helmet Snell rating with an expiration date.

Typically not since they have moving parts.

For racing fixed back is the only way to go
