Read in our news that 2 people died in a crash at the private Track Area 27. The driver and passenger died when their car lost control and hit a concrete wall. Really shocking to hear when stuff like this happens at a HPDE event, so rare. Actually I am not sure if this was an HPDE event or just an open track day for members.
I recently ran this track for the first time and it is hands down my favorite track so far. It is fast and flows nicely. While on any track I always think, what if, what if. What if I loose it in this corner, what might happen. This thought process usually keeps my speed in check during my laps. There is one corner at Area 27 that really did scare me when I thought this, and that is corner 6. I was going through it at about 100mph and if you loose it there is a short run off area and a concrete wall. I know I could have gone faster, but that wall kept me from really pushing in that corner.
The news article did not go into detail on where it happened on the track or what kind of car it was, I just wonder if it was that corner. Condolences to the families and friends of those 2 people. They went to a track day to have fun and enjoy life and it ended their lives. Makes me realize installing a roll bar was a smart thing to do.
Be safe out there people!
