Hi All,

I plan to paint the stainless steel exhaust tips on my 19 GT when I take delivery of it in 2 weeks. Going with gloss black. After doing some research, I picked up self etching primer and a high temp gloss block (500 degrees). What I am not clear on is if I need to sand/scuff up the tips or not since they won’t have had years of grime on them. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Scuff them up good for better adhesion.

I would lightly sand them to roughen up the surface prior to priming.

Thanks, that is what I was thinking.

Thanks, do you recommend certain grit or steel wool? I read somewhere someone used 600 but they said to use it on a circular sander instead of by hand.

I did some tips previously and used 00 steel wool.
Lower grit sandpaper will tend to leave grooves visib!e in the paint.
Use acid etch primer and give it another rub, then hit it with paint..

Thanks. So you’re saying even after the coat of primer, do some light scrubbing with the steel wool 00 then paint?

Yes, a light scrub, maybe use 000 steel wool for the primer.

I didn’t realize they could be removed like that. That’s going to make my life WAY easier. Thought I’d have to drop the exhaust.

This is on a Shelby. Just wanted to show you the gloss back paint and how it looks.

I believe on your car you do have to drop the exhaust. Pretty simple.

On the shelby i also had to drop the exhaust and take off the bumper. Lots of work.
