Sorry Randy... His tie does seem a little GT350R though... Good Ol' Dave...

I know a few of you fell in love with the color as did I. I wouldn't count it out completely.

As some have said, the paint application is more of a process than a special blend of Unicorn horns and Endangered Species skins. Right now, the color would be extremely expensive if made available.

I have a degree w/ Paint Chemistry (SW and PPG) and a lot of experience with Custom colors like the Harlequin's. Custom Paint is a pain in the ass, if anyone remembers the Mystic Cobra Paint #1 and #2 (#2 is still a secret but, the prisms were explained in detail). Ford would bring us the color, watch us paint and then collect everything with paint on it and leave. As well as checking the VIN before they come out... That was a special paint only, no custom method of additional coats. It blends easy and thats as easy as paint gets...

I will keep an ear to the ground and find out just how special the paint is and how difficult the technique is to apply it. The technique will ultimately be responsible for the Go/No Go as an offering.

Once we get some Chemistry info, I can tell you how much the paint is. Although, I don't think that info will be made public. I will need to observe an actual mix to give you a ball park estimate... I can't say I would ever be offered the chance.

If it is just a 3 Step Process, that can be done at the plant. If it is a hand painted car, I doubt that will make it to the Mustang.

Although, I seen someone above mention that each coat is sprayed in 3 different directions... That is not possible on the line... That would be an overspray nightmare and wet sanding would be required... A lot of wet sanding...

Here is a BMW Plant and how they paint a mass produced vehicle. Please take a second to watch. This is to show you the systematic procedure for full coverage with minimum overspray.

Now, that isn't very complicated... The Gray fluid the cars are dipped in is called Factory E-Coat. This is the Mecca of Primer and should stay on the vehicle if possible, even through a collision. Nothing beats factory E-Coat... It is electronically "sucked" onto the body panels in every crack and scratch. The E-Coat isn't really special BUT, the process IS and cannot be duplicated at Mom and Pop shops or even at the Dealership.

So, first thing is first... Is the paint applied by hand?

Even if it IS applied by hand, there is nothing stopping Ford from spraying the color through automation. However, it is applied by hand and requires extensive wet sanding, it will be difficult to offer.

I just don't see any paint being applied in 3 different directions. It doesn't help with coverage and would create a rough finish.

In the past, Ford has made special show car colors available afterwards. The transition is simple BUT, if Liquid is (for some reason) applied by hand and in different directions, there is absolutely nothing stopping them from spraying the car using automated sprayers. If additional layers are needed, they can just run the program again like Tri-Yella... No big deal...
