There was an excellent online video clip (more than an hour long) that recorded a presentation by a Phd chemist from Afton Chemicals to the Royal Society of Chemical Engineers. Afton Chemicals is one of Europe's largest makers of additive packs for motor oil. The presentation was called "Slippery Secrets" and dealt with the performance and formulation of modern motor oils. Sadly the link to the video clip no longer works or I'd give it here.
At the end of the video, the chemist talked about how the formulation of oils recommended by car mfrs. is a team effort by the car mfrs' engine development engineers, and the lubricant engineers and tribologists from the car mfr.'s lubricant partner (e.g. Ford-Motorcraft, BMW-Shell, Porsche-Castrol, etc.). These lubricant development teams even go so far as to take into consideration the particular metallurgy of the car mfrs' family of engines. Maybe with the exception of Motorcraft, these oils are typically only available thru dealers parts departments.
Another online article called the "Value of Performance", described how VW and its lubricant partner Castrol spent seven million dollars developing the formulation and specification for VW's recommended diesel oils. The link to that article has also gone, unfortunately, or I'd post it.
To me, that says a lot about car mfrs due diligence. And it also says something about the value of oils that meet car mfrs' specs.
Maybe what Drakoni meant to say is that Motorcraft oils are designed for Ford engines.
