Had my oil/filter replaced at the weekend so I decided to check my catch can after about 6 weeks and I was surprised to see there was actually about 5-10mm of what looked like oil and smelt a little of petrol. It also had bits of crap in the bottom too

That's quite a lot.
I only installed mine the other week, done over 4.5K in the car before I got round to fitting it :headbonk:. Took a whole 20 seconds to install too:shrug:. I'll still be interested to see what it catches in the weeks / months ahead. Realistically though, I can't imagine the engine getting any damage as a result of not having one.

I checked mine on the weekend after about 350 miles or so & got about 15 ml out of it. Money well spent in my book

Na there were 2 or 3 lumps, they didn't look metal, they were the colour of the oil and looked like thick sludge

I check my mishimoto every 1000 miles or so.
1/4 of a can of dark oil but never had any bits in it.
For a quick mod well worth doing.

Big_G looks like he's got nothing in his lol

better crap in the can, than crap in the engine, the point of the can is to stop that crap being put in the engine :)

You will always get some fuel diluting the oil - particularly on a new engine where the rings haven't fully bedded in. Fuel is very thin and can get past the piston rings including the oil control ring. The more long journeys you do the better. Cold start will be the main contribution. Not something to worry about I would think.

The crap in the bottom is likely to be plastic shards where you've screwed in the in & out pipes, had that with mine.

Anyway, fitted mine just after i had my oil changed at 4800 mile, just shy of 6000 mile i checked it and it was empty.

Don't worry about the crap.

The oil in your engine heats up every day and the fuel gets burnt off. Whereas in your catch can the oil does not heat up as such the fuel does not burn off, as such the two mix and it turns into more a sludge mess.

This is why short trips are bad for engines, because the oil suffers from fuel dilution then and of course if fuel is making your oil thinner will result in more engine wear.

I do a lot of short trip

Just make sure you take the car for a good drive at least once every two weeks for 30 minutes plus to ensure all the fuel gets burnt off.

This is why I do not believe in low-temp thermostats etc like a lot of US guys fit, because our engine is designed to get upto certain temperatures and you need your oil fully upto temperature to burn of fuel and stop the fuel dilution of the oil.

It is not the end of the world, you can just change oil more frequently. :)

Had an oil change at 1800 miles yesterday at TVR101.
Also emptied the Ford oil/air separator and got this lot out:

That's about 35ml that would otherwise be circulating the car's lungs. Worth thinking about.
