Ok so I'm a new muscle car/Mustang owner. I noticed the green valve stem cap and found out the tires have nitrogen in them. How fast does this stuff really leak out and how much does it cost to re inflate them? I know it's a lot different than compressed air and I am not able to put compressed air in them.

Putting air in em wont hurt....its 80% Nitrogen. The only difference is N2 isnt supposed to fluctuate pressure with temp but it does. I run N2 in my dirt oval kart tires and they change pressure after the tires warm up. If you want to keep putting N2 in em you'll have to find a shop that does it or go buy a regulator and bottle from a gas supply to fill your own.

Nitrogen fills are mostly smoke and mirrors anyhow, if you look at a pamphlet on why you should pay $40 for it, it will say "well you'll save hundreds of dollars a year on fuel!!". But the fine print will say "compared to an underinflated tire".

it is more stable on pressure variance, but check the air in your tires every month or so and your good to go.

Since you already have nitrogen in them, TNcoupe is right, putting a pound or two of air with 80% nitrogen won't hurt the purity of what's in there.

most machines use a permeated bladder to filter out most of the other gasses and you get around 98% nitrogen purity and then when the machine purges the tire it doesn't actually pull all of the air out, but does purge it twice usually.

Thanks guys, good to know I'm not doing anything wrong by putting compressed air in the tires. Believe me I'll be checking pressures weekly in this beast! so I should have no issues.

Here is the chemical make of "AIR":

Nitrogen -- N2 -- 78.084%
Oxygen -- O2 -- 20.9476%
Argon -- Ar -- 0.934%
Carbon Dioxide -- CO2 -- 0.0314%
Neon -- Ne -- 0.001818%
Methane -- CH4 -- 0.0002%
Helium -- He -- 0.000524%
Krypton -- Kr -- 0.000114%
Hydrogen -- H2 -- 0.00005%
Xenon -- Xe -- 0.0000087%
Ozone -- O3 -- 0.000007%
Nitrogen Dioxide -- NO2 -- 0.000002%
Iodine -- I2 -- 0.000001%
Carbon Monoxide -- CO -- trace
Ammonia -- NH3 -- trace

So if they are telling you 80% nitrogen under that green cap, something ain't right.
