New GT transmission grind

Purchased a new GT convertible 3 weeks ago. The car has always had a slight grind while shifting into 4th. Does it every time in the morning (Oil temp cold). As it warms up, it will go away under light throttle shifting. But it will grind into 4th under heavier load like passing a car, or higher speed when merging onto the interstate.

The dealer initially told me the transmission needs to "seat and let it loosen up". I'm at 1000 miles now, and it's still grinding. My gut tells me it's a synchro issue and needs to be repaired. Anyone have similar issues? Was the transmission rebuilt or replaced?

I had the same issue on my 15 GT PP. Especially when cold, I would get a little nimble, grind going into 4th. I could time my shifts a bit to minimize it, but it happened more often than I liked.

But... I am going to have to agree with the dealer for the first time in my life. The MT-82 seems to need a significant break-in period. I'd say at 2000 miles or so I noticed the transmission behaving much better. Cleaner shifts, less noise and less nibbles. at 7k mi, I get a nibble into 4th every other month or so.

My trans felt like complete garbage until I hit 7k miles and got the mgw shifter. It's perfect now. I'll end up doing a fluid change later this year to reinforce that. It really does seem like the trans needs to break in some.

Have Ford check it, because then there is a history in the system of the issue.
Have them bleed the clutch and make sure you are fully pressing the clutch during shifts.

Ford puts an additive (XL-18) in the factory fill to help the syncro's break in. You could see if they will change the fluid out and install the additive (maybe yours did not get additive or the proper ratio) The factory fluid is not that great. If it is not resolved after 1000 more miles change the fluid, to BG Syncro Shift II.

Barton and MGW are proven shifters that do make a huge difference.

I had the Ford technician drive the car this morning. It made the grind each time he shifted into 4th. The technician commented that there is an issue that needs to be resolved. They are going to call me back with a recommendation for the repair.

I have a similiar issue with third, 1935 miles. Dealer said nothing out of the ordinary so ill be glued to the results here.

The car is going back into Ford this Friday. Sounds like they are going to try the fluid flush and check the shifter linkage first. If that doesn't fix it, I've instructed them to keep the car until it shifts properly. I'll update the tread with the details of the repairs.

The transmission oil was found to be full of metal. This must have been from driving it with the 3-4 grind. The car had exactly 1212 miles when I took it in. Anyhow the Ford dealer is doing a complete rebuilt of the transmission under warranty.

Barton, heavy shift knob, and Royal Purple made massive difference. Then the RXT twin made another huge difference.
