Does anyone know where the horse logo came from and why? If the mustang was named after a jet I would have expected something more suiting to a jet.

The P-51 Mustang was a Prop-driven WW II fighter, not a jet.

There seems to be a bit of debate about it when/why/if it was changed from plane to horse, but I'm betting that if it was named after the fighter plane, the marketing peeps at Ford at the time were like.. no way, make it a horse.. we can sell a horse.. to women AND men, etc. ;)

Yea, I've always heard it started as the P-51 but Ford quickly realized they shouldn't base a car on an aircraft that was only going to be current for a few years so they went with the horse.

While the initial namesake was the P-51 (not a Jet.. :)) and was initially suggested by John Najjar. the P-51 was named after the horse.

A lot of speculation as to the logo - one thing that i heard was that North American would not allow the likeness of the aircraft to be used for marketing.

another had to do with Robert Eggart having raised and bread Mustangs creating the mustang logo.

one thing that is for certain, the P-51 was the genesis of the "Mustang" name. All Iococca had to do with anything was signing the paychecks and standing around for Photo Ops. :)
