MMR's new 5.0 Coyote Billet Rear Main Seal Housing/Block Support for all 2011-2017 Blocks. This new 1/2 Billet plate from MMR yields 69% higher strength than the Cast aluminum OE part. This means not only is it stronger but supports the rear of the block and rear main cap better. A Lower friction 1 piece rear main seal is include along with hardware. The factory Crank trigger and sensor bolt on just like factory but with a thicker and stronger mounting boss for rock solid Ignition timing. This item has been team tested by mmr on the worlds fastest 5.0 Coyote engine well into the 6 second 1/4 mile range and over 2400HP!

Can this be installed, in car, during a typical clutch/flywheel upgrade?

Yes, just unbolt the flywheel or flexplate and unbolt the rear cover and replace with mmr cover.

Excuse my ignorance but what does this prevent and who needs it?

They simply replace the cast thin rear cover, it acts like a 6th main cap and actually helps strengthen the block, it also includes a low friction 1 pc seal which reduces drag.
