Livernois Downpipe Install and Smoke

Hi guys, I just installed a new Livernois downpipe couple of weeks ago and it's been smoking? It was pretty bad this morning when I started the car, looked out the door and there was smoke all over the place coming out of the exhaust?

Although, I was told nothing to worry about the pipe it's breaking in, I'm just worried that it's not something else such as a blown turbo or turbo seals?

Is this normal or??

Who told you it's just the pipe breaking in? I can't imagine it would be anyone that regularly reads this board...

I agree with EcoSwag, sounds like the smoking turbo problem from the thread he linked.

So is this an issue mostly with catless downpipes? For example, it is possible I could have zero smoking issues now but when I install a catless downpipe I'll have smoke?

Actually Livernois installed a catted downpipe, Initially after I had it installed a couple of weeks ago I had some performance issues, smoke, and some rattling so I took it back last week. After looking into it they retuned it and informed me there was a bracket that broke from the downpipe possibly by hitting a pothole or something which surprized me cuz I baby my car and barely drove it. I got the car back after 3 days and the performance is much better than when I 1st picked it up- although in Sports mode I feel as if it's not the same performance as I had prior to the installation of the downpipe. The smoke is still there and at times heavy- everyone I talked to stated that doesn't sound right for a downpipe to have a "break in" period for the smoke to go away. I went on the recommendation of the downpipe by Livernois.

The issue may or may not be present with the stock downpipe. You just aren't likely to see it without a catless downpipe.

That's what I thought. So basically I'd have no idea. In that case, would it be damaging the cat?

This issue never existed on my stock downpipe and actually, I was pleased with the performance I had and after I was informed I could gain 30-40HP I said why not? I'm not a mechanic nor is that my field, however, I have spent way too much money into my car and want to make sure there are no issues.

Hard to say if the cat is being messed up or not, long term? Maybe. But it's important to remember it only takes a very small amount of oil to make a lot of smoke so the cat is likely fine.

There are three main solutions that have worked so far and they are all detailed in the thread linked earlier. In short they are -

1. Change to Rotella T6 5w40, and bump the idle up.
2. Put a dual valve catch can on (or single valve with check valve installed on the dirty line) and drill out the PCV.
3. Change the banjo bolt that supplies oil to the turbo with one with smaller holes.

I'd read the whole thread personally, probably take a while, but a lot of good info came out in it.

I appreciate all of your input- I'm hoping Livernois will have input as well. At the end of the day, if there are any issues, I'd like for Livernois to take care of them which so far they've been great about.

I can't imagine them having a problem bumping your idle higher.

Bump your idle to 1k and change your oil, that will fix it. Get a catch can for peace of mind but that won't help this issue one bit.
