I'm trying to figure out the best place for an external mic for video recording. It is loud back there and overloading the mic. I mounted it on the bumper just below the decklid. The recording gets a little crackly so I'm going to try and find a high pressure zone somewhere to prevent wind issues and still get some good accurate sound.

I'm using a Sony ECM-DS70P for an external mic placing it under the ledge above the lisence plate wrapped in foam. It picks up the road noise and clips when the exhaust starts crackling, I discovered that I can clear it up some by turning the gain down some when I edit. I'm going to try placing the mic under the spoiler next, the track pack spoiler should help block the wind and get further away from the exhaust. Here is an unedited vid before adjusting the gain.

It's honestly just some cheapo similar to this:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...ap=y&m=Y&c3api=1876,92051678402,&Q=&A=details

It couldn't have been more than like $15 when I bought it. It's been a while and I finally just got a case for my GoPro that accommodates that STUPID USB adaption on the Hero 3. I don't understand why they made all interfaces USB rather than keeping the 3.5mm port but whatevs. I just work here.
I have been playing with my mic location for quite sometime. The two best spots I have found are actually in the trunk and inside the rear bumper. I have a cheap mic as well and I would assume a better mic would make a difference.

Probably yeah. The actual sound accuracy is very good surprisingly. It just can't take all the grunt. How is the sound accuracy inside the trunk?

I'm guessing it's latency of the USB interface, combined with the mic latency. I have done many noise surveys on firing ranges, dealing with very high sound pressure levels with a microsecond sensitive mic and found that most mics, unless they are very expensive and made for job, have peak dB clipping. Just guessing but your peak dB requirement could be as high as 120 dB. Combine that with bus latency and you have poor quality that you may not be able to correct if using a GoPro to record sound.

Just hero3+. Tested and confirmed this camera placement for my next track session. It will be edited with two other cameras on car. I did not think it would sound good, but it does!

Is your exhaust stock or aftermarket. It sounds wonderful

I have heard great things about that mic. A couple of the Porsche guys use it and have great results with it.

Inside the truck sounds a lot like what you would expect, just lower your backseats and it is pretty much like that. Personally, I like it however you do hear a lot of the rock "tings" and nothing from the outside like other cars passing. I prefer to keep it outside just for that since I usually go driving with friends and like to hear them pass, rev, etc.
