While waiting for my replacement dash cam to arrive, I experimented with using my iphone 6 as a dash cam.

I downloaded CarCamApp (info here https://forum.dashcamtalk.com/threads/iphone-app-carcamapp.563/ ) and bought one of these windshield suction things http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M807UK8?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00 ,
which came with a magnet I placed between my (thin plastic) phone case and back of the phone.

It worked pretty well in a pinch. The app is easy to use. The picture quality was decent, and I recorded 2 hrs of footage (4 half-hr segments). You can dump your vids into Dropbox (mine has yet to work, however), and even voice activate it to start recording. The holder was strong enough, withstanding all bumps in the roads, resulting in no shaky video. As expected, though, there are many drawbacks:

- it is a pain to keep having to plug and unplug your phone if you carry it with you everywhere (and thus, no footage when you leave your car unattended)
- phone could fry in direct sunlight
- no wide-angle shooting; limited view
- if you listen to music in the car you have to turn your music app / itunes on first

Still, it was worth trying out and it only set me back $12 for the holder. :)

Never thought of using a phone...the direct sunlight issue is not so much of an issue in Scotland ;)
