No matter what I do, every time I change my oil I make a huge mess when removing the filter.

I have a GT PP if that makes a difference. Is there an external oil cooler? It looks like there is some tubing for one where the filter screws in.

Anyway, I've tried everything. The first time I put a bag around it as suggested and it caught some of the oil but a ton went all over the place. Today I tried a bag + a screwdriver through the filter to drain it prior to unscrewing it and even after the filter appeared to be empty, unscrewing it got oil everywhere.

I have never had such an issue with any other car... it drives me nuts to not be able to change oil in a clean way!

Put a bag over it. Or put a piece of paper down in that area to funnel the oil away from what normally gets covered in crap.

Bag cover over the loosened filter and twist it off while holding the bag over the oil cooler housing.
You need to pull the bag over the oil cooler to 100% cover the filter.

Just Crack the filter loose and let the oil run down the filter into the collection pan below it.
