I'm looking to change the oil out next weekend and I'd like to know how not to make a mess on the floor if doing this on jack stands? In particular, because the drain plug isn't the old school screw type in which you can control the flow a little better. How large of an oil catching area and oil pan do you need to keep splash to a minimum?

How do I ensure I don't stain the hell out of my floor giving this a go?

Thanks.

Get a pig mat... you can pick anywhere (Amazon Oriely Advance etc). I’d laid that down first and then use a 15qt oil catch pan. Shouldn’t be an issue with that combo.

There's no guarantee unless you cover the floor.

Big pieces of cardboard come to mind.

Or just pay a shop to do it. After decades of changing oil myself, I got sick of the mess, and taking the oil back to the parts store. I just pay to have it done.

With how infrequent the oil needs changing, it's no big deal.

Large deep pan, someone used a large bucket from Home Depot. I personally hold the plug with my hand controlling oil flow - not a perfect solution but works well. And of course card board around because no matter how hard you try, you'll always spill some...

I use a Sam’s, Members Mark, laundry detergent pail... perfect height and plenty of capacity.

I’d agree with you on just going to a shop if it weren’t for the fact that local shops by me wanted $120+ for 10 quarts of full synth 5w-30 :frown: went out and bought a 16 quart pan that day lmao

For $39.95 for "The Works" and pay with Ford Pass points, my dealer can keep doing it. I have a great relationship with my dealer and they take great care of me and my vehicles.

I pay $40 for the labor, and bring my own oil & filter. Had mine changed yesterday.

It's worth it to me. Easy peasy.

The shop I use is also super cool with me freaking out that someone else is driving my car, and going into the shop to supervise.:cwl::cwl:

ETA; the shop I use used to have a sign stating that customers were not allowed in the working area. Now the sign just reads that you need to wear safety glasses. They have no problem with me shooting the poop with the guy changing my oil.

Unlike most, I have access to a DIY shop on the army base I work at (civilian contractor). Lift and tools galore although some are broken lol. But for oil changes, I use a lift and they take care of the old oil and filter. Bay space is like $12 an hour, oil and filter like $100, doing the work myself, you can't put a price on the enjoyment.
